چکیده

Satellite imagery, synoptic-scale analyses and automatic weather station data were used to study a subsynoptic-scale cyclone that developed over the Ross Sea and Ross Ice Shelf areas of Antarctica. A pre-existing subsynoptic-scale midtropospheric cyclone descended from southern Victoria Land into the semi-permanent baroclinic environment over the south-western corner of the Ross Sea. The subsynoptic-scale cyclone then developed into a frontal system travelling south-eastward over the Ross Ice Shelf and decayed five days later over Marie Byrd Land. It is concluded that stretching of the subsynoptic-scale low, while descending over 2000 m from the highplateaudownto sealeve1,increasedits cyclonicvorticityviaconservationofpotentialvorticity. This, along with a cold katabatic outbreak into the northern part of the circulation, provided the mechanisms for its initial development. Subsequently, cold boundary-layer air over the Ross Ice Shelf spiralled into the subsynoptic-scale cyclone supporting its further development. An upper-level synoptic-scale cyclone that approached the area provided the upper-level support for its ESE displacement and development. Received 25 January 1994, accepted 28 November 1994

A Case Study of a Ross Ice Shelf Airstream Event: A New Perspective*

A case study illustrating cloud processes and other features associated with the Ross Ice Shelf airstream (RAS), in Antarctica, is presented. The RAS is a semipermanent low-level wind regime primarily over the western Ross Ice Shelf, linked to the midlatitude circulation and formed from terrain-induced and large-scale forcing effects. An integrated approach utilizes Moderate Resolution Imaging ...

A Case Study of Antarctic Katabatic Wind Interaction with Large-Scale Forcing*

Surface pressure decreases of up to 20 hPa occurred over much of the Antarctic continent during a 4-day midwinter period of 1988. The widespread change in the pressure field accompanied intense cyclonic activity to the north of the ice sheet. The equatorward mass transport across the Antarctic coastline resulted in a redistribution of atmospheric pressure that extended to the subtropics of the ...

Hemispheric Atmospheric Variations and Oceanographic Impacts Associated With Katabatic Surges Across the Ross Ice Shelf, Antarctica

Numerical simulations and surface-based observations how that katabatic winds persistently converge toward and blow across the Siple Coast part of West Antarctica onto the Ross Ice Shelf. About 14% of the time during winter (April to August 1988), thermal infrared satellite images reveal the horizontal propagation of this negatively buoyant katabatic airstream for al•out 1000 km across the ice ...

Seismic observations of glaciogenic ocean waves (micro-tsunamis) on icebergs and ice shelves

Seismometers deployed over a 3 year period on icebergs in the Ross Sea and on the Ross Ice Shelf, Antarctica, reveal that impulsive sources of ocean surface waves are frequent (e.g. ∼200 events per year in the Ross Sea) in the ice-shelf and iceberg-covered environment of coastal Antarctica. The 368 events recorded by our field deployment suggest that these impulsive events are generated by glac...

Freshening of the Ross Sea during the late 20th century.

Ocean measurements in the Ross Sea over the past four decades, one of the longest records near Antarctica, reveal marked decreases in shelf water salinity and the surface salinity within the Ross Gyre. These changes have been accompanied by atmospheric warming on Ross Island, ocean warming at depths of approximately 300 meters north of the continental shelf, a more negative Southern Oscillation...
